More of London Day 1

After an afternoon nap, we ventured out for our first walk around London. It was about 6:00pm so the streets were very busy with business people rushing out of work, lots of joggers, as well as tourists. This was a quiet spot that looked very different from home.

As we walked along the Thames we zig-zagged through many alleys and tunnels like this one with a bridge overhead. The doorway in the distance is the Clink Prison Museum on Clink Street- we bet Jacob and Joel would be interested in stopping there.

We crossed the London Bridge and you can see the Tower Bridge in the background. It was very windy!

This is the Southwark (say: Southerk) Cathedral, very close to where we are staying. There are lots of cafés and pubs in the neighborhood as well. Everything around is very well labeled so it’s easy to get your bearings even though the streets are very winding and chaotic. We will take a picture of signpost later!

This pub, named after Shakespeare’s famous Globe Theatre, was very inviting. There were tons of locals hanging out after work drinking pints of beer on the street. Chris and I will go back soon to sample a beverage.

This is the Southwark Bridge at sunset, with St. Paul’s Cathedral dome in the background. We are lucky to be staying in such a nice part of London. About 8:00 we finally stopped for dinner at a Greek restaurant! Max was ready to eat- he was saying “mmm- mmm” every time we passed a restaurant!

  1. Throw them into the clink….are you familiar with this synonym for jail? Now I know where that came from.
    Columbia Encyclopedia: Clink,
district in Southwark, a Greater London borough, England. The Clink prison was used from the 13th cent. as a detention place for heretics. Its name is now a slang term for a prison or jail.

  2. Wow, thanks for the information! We’ve heard the term, but didn’t know where it came from. Funny it’s right in our neighborhood here!
